🌍 Geographical Characteristics of Ramapuram

Geographically, Ramapuram is a region situated in the midland zone of Kerala. Located at approximately 9.36° North latitude and 76.34° East longitude, the region belongs to the midland zone, yet it is rich in hills and mountainous terrain. 🏔️ Mountains and Hills Surrounding Ramapuram

Nedumala and Kuruvankunnu are situated towards the north, Kuzhamala lies to the west, and the Anthyalam hills are located towards the south. The Panchayat can be broadly described as a landscape formed by the slopes of these hills and the relatively extensive valleys lying between them.

Kurinji Koomban, which continues from the Nedumala region, rises steeply in a rounded and massive form, as indicated by its name. Water has flowed over the rocky surface for generations, leaving exposed rock formations on its upper slopes. There is no significant settlement or conventional agricultural activity on the uppermost part of the Koomban.

However, the Koomban constitutes only a relatively small portion of the total geographical area of Ramapuram.

⛰️ Major Geographical Features

Nedumala

A long-stretching mountain range that also forms part of the boundary between Kottayam and Idukki districts.

Kuruvankunnu

One of the prominent hill regions located towards the northern side of Ramapuram.

Kuzhamala

A fairly high mountain, the eastern slope of which falls within Ramapuram Grama Panchayat.

Anthyalam Hills

A natural hill region situated towards the southern part of Ramapuram.

Mountains & Valleys

Nedumala and Kuzhamala

Nedumala is a long mountain range and also forms part of the boundary between Kottayam and Idukki districts. A landslide occurred in Nedumala a few years ago. The water channels visible in the area indicate that landslides have occurred in this region in the past as well.

Kuzhamala is also a fairly high mountain. Its eastern slope falls within Ramapuram Grama Panchayat. A small landslide occurred in the Urulupadi area several years ago.

From Parunthanmala, which forms part of the Kuzhamala region, a large portion of Ramapuram can be viewed. Despite the mountainous terrain, these regions are largely suitable for agriculture.

🌱 Elevated Agricultural Areas

This region also contains numerous small hills. Most parts of the area consist of elevated terrain.

The area east of Kondad, including Valakkattukunnu, consists of elevated land suitable for agriculture.

Vazhaykkamala nearby and Pazhamala towards the north are not large mountains as their names might suggest; they are primarily small hills.

🌾 Nature and Agricultural Life

The elevated areas, small hills and valleys of Ramapuram are closely connected with agriculture. The diversity of the terrain creates favourable conditions for various types of agricultural activities.

The geographical diversity of hills, valleys, paddy fields and plantations gives Ramapuram its distinctive natural beauty and supports a rich agricultural landscape.

🏺

Archaeological Heritage and Muniyaras

According to a study report of the Archaeological Survey of India, numerous ancient burial chambers known as Muniyaras were discovered in the areas surrounding Kurinjikkavu and Chiraykkavu.

These Muniyaras are believed to have been constructed before 1000 BC. Studies of the Muniyaras at Kurinjikkavu indicate that human habitation existed in this region between approximately 3000 BC and 1000 BC.

The Kurinjikkavu areas therefore deserve consideration for inclusion in the list of heritage sites that require protection and conservation.

🏺 Evidence of Ancient Settlement: The Muniyaras of the Kurinjikkavu region are regarded as important evidence for understanding the ancient human settlement and cultural heritage of Ramapuram.

🌿 A Natural Expression of Kerala's Land of Mountains

Ramapuram Grama Panchayat in Kottayam District can be regarded as a geographical region that reflects the traditional description of Kerala as a land of mountains and hills.

It is a human settlement with a history that is closely linked with the ancient heritage of Kerala. Kurinjikkoomban, Kottamala, Kuravankunnu and Kuzhamala stand like natural guardians around relatively level areas resembling a broad plateau. Small hills, elevated lands, streams and waterways occur throughout the region, creating fertile and naturally blessed soil.

Along with plantation crops, a variety of cultivated crops, paddy, banana and hill vegetables add rich greenery to the landscape.

🌾

Paddy Cultivation

Paddy fields and rice cultivation in the lower-lying areas are important components of Ramapuram's traditional agricultural life.

🍌

Banana and Cultivated Crops

Banana and a variety of cultivated crops enrich the agricultural landscape and contribute to the rural economy of the region.

🌿

Plantation Crops and Hill Vegetables

The elevated areas of Ramapuram provide suitable conditions for plantation crops and hill vegetables, contributing to the agricultural diversity of the Panchayat.

💧 Streams and Watercourses

Ramapuram has a natural landscape filled with small hills, elevated lands, streams and watercourses. These natural water resources are important components of the local environment and agricultural life.

🌳 A Land of Greenery

Plantation crops, paddy, banana, hill vegetables and various agricultural crops together create the lush green landscape that gives Ramapuram its distinctive natural character.

🌿 Ramapuram – Where Nature and Heritage Meet

The distinctive geographical identity of Ramapuram is shaped by its mountains, hills, valleys, paddy fields, streams, plantations and ancient heritage. Its natural resources, agricultural traditions and archaeological heritage together form an invaluable natural and cultural legacy. Protecting these resources while moving towards sustainable development will help preserve the unique identity of Ramapuram for future generations.
