Right to Information Act - 2005

 

Right to Information Act, 2005 is a law that guarantees the legal right of citizens to obtain information from public authorities, including government departments and local self-government institutions. The main objective of this Act is to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public participation in governance.

Every public authority is required to appoint a Public Information Officer (PIO) and provide the requested information, ordinarily within 30 days from the date of receipt of the application. In matters concerning the life and liberty of a person, the information must be provided within 48 hours.

The information requested should be clearly specified in the application. If the information is not provided or if the response is unsatisfactory, the applicant has the right to file a first appeal and subsequent appeals as provided under the Act.
